Chapter 5

Then.

Saturday, June 20th.

Launch Pad 4, the Iranian Desert.

“Can we be the tip of the spear if we’re the whole spear?” Private Bragg asked as the LAV-25 rolled over the gentle curve of the desert sand, cruising at a decent pace, the second two vehicles flanking a short distance behind.

“Just the tip, though, right?” asked PFC Francesco and they both chuckled.

“Boys will be boys,” muttered Private Yallick, rolling her eyes at the joking Marines. The three of them were loaded up in the LAV-25, the vehicle designated as LAV-1, rumbling a short distance ahead of the two flanking vehicles. The LAV or Light Armored Vehicle came into circulation in the 1980’s and at this point in the vehicle’s history was several decades old, yet still the go-to vehicle for the 1st Light Armored Recon Division. A smaller vehicle, it was lightly armored as the name suggested with an angled front, coming together into a broad arrowhead type point. Equipped with eight wheels and a mounted turret system, the drivers typically sat in twin cockpits up near the front with the two-man turret and more seats situated near the rear.

The LAV was an amphibious vehicle, though the Marines out in the Iranian desert were not anticipating using it as such. Each vehicle was painted dark and covered with slices of camouflage, replacement tires perched near the rear on either side of the turret. The M-242 Bushmaster still adorned the main turret itself, though the Marines in the turret also carried Squad Automatic Weapons for supplemental fire if needed.

The Bushmaster was a 25mm chain-driven autocannon capable of devastating results at short and long range against ground or air targets. It was a very old weapon, but reliable, and while many military divisions were moving further into the 21st century, the 1st Light Armored Recon Division liked to stick with what worked.

And so they had.

Following the lead LAV, the other two vehicles rolled slowly over the desert sands, their distinctive shapes nearly invisible in the dim light. Marcus sat in the turret of LAV-2, a set of powerful night vision goggles pressed to his eyes. Twisting the magnifier, he watched the four guard houses, analyzing the movements of the men within as they rolled slowly that direction. Pretty soon they would be too close to hide the engine sounds and at that point, all bets would be off and this thing would officially become a live-fire exercise.

“LAV-1,” he whispered into the microphone that angled from his kevlar helmet down toward his mouth. “Slow up and put on the brakes. We’re getting dangerously close.”

“Acknowledged,” the driver of the first LAV replied and Marcus could see it slowing down.

“LAV-3, match speed and progress of LAV-1.”

“Roger.”

All three of them now sat still in the desert sands as he stared out at the guard houses, then moved the night vision so he could see the watchtowers as well. The red and orange smears of movement throughout the compound told him where the enemies were located, and he compared that to their current position, trying to calculate the best avenue of attack.
